Shantykoret Cape Horn

Shantykoret Cape Horn was established in Bergen in 1975.  The original choir were members of the Cape Horn Club, which consisted of sailors who had rounded Cape Horn.  They have since retired, but the choir’s aim today remains the same, namely to keep alive traditions from the days of sailing ships.  Sea shanties were the sailors’ working songs.  Heavy, repetitive work aboard ship demanded powerful rhythms, often with a touch of humour to lighten the day.

A senior choir, accompanied by lively accordion playing, they revive and maintain old sea shanties, sailor songs and other songs of historical interest.  Members of the choir have collected their repertoire over many years.  They practise weekly and perform before many different audiences.  In particular, Shantykoret Cape Horn provides regular entertainment for residents of hospitals and care homes.  Their sound is rich and full.
